The Hoffmann Technique

James Hoffmann is one of the coffee gurus on Youtube. He continues to break coffee down to a science. If there is someone who obsesses over coffee more than James, I don’t want to meet them.

In this video, James shows us how to get the most out of our French Press, appropriately dubbed the Hoffmann Technique. His technique provides a way to ensure that there isn’t any silt or grounds left floating in the French Press. I have summarized it below.

  • Step 1: Dont Be in a Hurry - take your time with this method and have patience.

  • Step 2: Acquire excellent coffee - since there is only two ingredients in this, you want high quality, fresh coffee. Try to get whole bean coffee and grind it yourself

  • Step 3: Pick your recipe - select your preferred concentration of coffee to water.

  • Step 4: Get a digital scale - be precise with your measurements and develop your preferred recipe.

  • Step 5: Use fresh, filtered water - the only other ingredient other than coffee. You want the highest quality filtered water you can get your hands on.

  • Step 6: Grind your whole coffee beans to a medium grind and put it in the French Press. Let this sit for four minutes.

  • Step 7: Using two tablespoons, stir the upper crust. Scoop the foam and bits on top out and toss them away. Let the coffee sit for five to eight minutes. This will allow the sediment to fall to the bottom of the press.

  • Step 8: Bring the plunger down to the surface of the coffee and use it as a strainer. Do not plunge to the bottom. Pour and enjoy.
