Pour Over vs. Immersion Brew

If you are new to the specialty coffee scene, you might be a bit confused to the different ways to brew the perfect cup. Make sure you check out our Brew Guides to help you find a brew method that fits the best with your lifestyle. In this blog, I wanted to explain the differences between pour over and immersion brew methods.

Pour Over brewing is when boiling water is slowly poured over coffee grounds through a filter. This is a quick way to brew a cup of coffee as gravity is taking care of most of the work. The end result of Pour Over brewing can vary based on the coarseness of the coffee grounds, the amount of water used, and the speed a which the water is poured through the coffee grounds. Examples of this brewing method include the Chemex and the Hario V60.

immersion brewing, as in its name, is when the coffee grounds are immersed in water. Immersion brewing allows complete control of the brew process including the temperature and how long you immerse the grounds in water. Typically the coffee grounds can be a coarse grind, which makes this a perfect method for people who don’t have a grinder and want to use a blender to grind the coffee beans. Examples of this brewing method include the French Press and the Aeropress.
